RED CABBAGES ARE BIG THIS AUTUMN - I enjoyed working in 3d, probably as I tend to convert everything I see into two dimensions. I also liked letting the material guide me and influence my outcome. So I have picked a raw material that I have never handled before: Red cabbage leaves. I was really surprised when I first pulled at the outer leaves. I want to explore the material. See what it does. Find its strengths? Look at the patterns and colour; Stretch it; dry it; burn it; let it be itself and see where we go. What I want to avoid is trying to make it something it's not, but see if, as I suspect, it holds a few surprises.

Started exploring cabbage as a material. It's pretty interesting, feels like a latex or rubber and dries in a similar fashion to leather. Instinctively I took photos or it and then scanned it and produced some abstract images by playing with chemicals and photoshop. Whilst producing something far departed from cabbage, it's all a bit " so what ", so I will try an treat it like a material and made a simply garment from the leaves. Today I will experiment with stitching and then device a basic pattern to follow. By next Monday I hope have something finished, ready to photograph in the various stages of its drying out and rotting. We'll see!
ReplyDeleteAnother delay! I need to shoot the garment as soon as I have finished it as it will start to rot pretty quickly and for some reason the photographic studios close almost two weeks before the end of term ... apparently to clean the floors. I would have thought the Christmas period would be a good time to do that, but what do I know!

ps. Yes, I know I could shoot it elsewhere, but I would like to shoot it in the studio.
